I Chose Well …
After the Matsec results!
During the mid-summer work shut-downs, where families are usually enjoying a break, results from the Matsec Board of Examinations where announced. The year wasn’t easy for students restrained to their homes, under order by a nation besieged by the Covid-19 viral pandemic.
Many families will now be assessing their options, weighing career wishes of the children to the grades attained in either the SEC ordinary level or the Matriculation certificate, and the requirements for the particular Degree. Because, any meaningful career includes the achievement of a reputable degree, attained at reasonably higher class of achievement.
Many students and parents would have already set their minds on a particular university or degree. Those who attained the minimum points as required for entry to their particular degree programme, may think it a waste of time to continue reading this article. Yet, so many fall by the way side during their higher education — a journey started with much motivation and eagerness, end in disaster because the system simply grinds the unprepared into the ground.
And what if things did not go as planned and those required pesky grades have not been achieved? Many will cut their summer short and re-sit — that last push to join the course they had planned to. But with very few weeks to go, and results published after the start of an academic year, may mean that it is a useless struggle.
Does the world stop here?
Look around
We at Saint Martin’s Institute understand this situation and we know how challenging such times can be, both to parents but most definitely to the teenage children, who cannot afford to waste another year, repeating to resit their MATSEC examinations.
We offer accessibility
We have created a system whereby students can start reading for our diplomas with easily achievable minimum entry requirements of four Sec grades 1–5 in Mathematics and English and at least another two subjects (Maltese is NOT required). Students are accepted to read for their one year MQF level 5 Diploma in the subject of their choice, leading to a two year MQF level 6 BSc (Hons) Degree awarded by the University of London. Students over 21 years may qualify as a mature student, and embark on the MQF level 5 diploma if they can show academic maturity and motivation towards career progression.
And accessibility is not simply the entry qualifications, but also reasonable and achievable tuition fees. Saint Martin’s Institute of Higher Education depends on tuition fees in order to offer its services to its student community, because it benefits from no support from central government. Yet, the Institute is very careful with its tuition fees, charging €94 per ECTS (€18.80 per hour) to students attending as full time students, and €50 per ECTS (€10 per hour) to evening students. We offer support
Lecturers are not there simply to deliver their respective courses and vanish from campus. Lecturers guide, mentor and teach continuously building a rapport with the student. Tutorials also ensure that those students who are finding difficulties find help early in order to ace their diploma and degree examinations.
We offer guidance
All our staff works in tandem to understand each student’s individual story. We get to know our students, what makes them happy and irritates them (although study they must!). We support them throughout their journey at Saint Martin’s Institute, ensuring stronger chances of success.
We offer a future
Families tend to overlook the most important aspect in career choice. Children in their teens will NOT join the job market until they are at least 21 years old. Five years make a huge impact on the job market, and parents and children should truly discuss skills and competences rather than jobs. Because the jobs that are familiar today, will be gone tomorrow. The jobs that may be making good money today, may be automated and lost by the time students graduate to start their career. Especially we offer degrees that are recognised as leading edge globally, based upon extensive research carried out by the University of London colleges that offer academic direction, as well as the Institute’s own academics who partake their own research pursuits.
How bright is your future at Saint Martin’s Institute?
An Institute is measured by how well (or badly) its students fare when assessed by independent examiners. Look at the impressive achievements — 60% of all SMI graduates attaining a First Class or Second Upper Honours in their respective degrees.
