The Institute offers students who are successfully finishing their compulsory secondary education, the opportunity to read for an MQF Level 5 Diploma in Computing.

The Diploma covers all aspects of computing through lectures and hands on practice, and replaces the need to read for the Matriculation Certificate. The Diploma covers all related subjects such as mathematics and physics that apply to computer science, as well as ancillary subjects that relate to the specialisations selected by the student.

Entry Requirements

You must have successfully finished compulsory education and normally be 16 years old by 30th April of the year of application;

Possess a minimum of 4 ordinary level passes at grade 5 or better, including Mathematics and English (the University of Malta requires a pass in Maltese for entry to its BSc programmes and the University of London requires a minimum of Grade 3 in Mathematics). whilst possession of Computer Studies and/or Physics are deemed to be assets, they are not compulsory.

Students who show grades 1 & 2 in six (6) SEC/GCE ordinary level subjects will benefit from a tuition fee reduction of €1,000 from the total fee for the Diploma. Learn more Click Here

Progression

Students have a choice variety of progression options after graduating from the Saint Martin’s Institute of Higher Education Diploma in Computing.

The University of London

under the academic direction of Goldsmiths College

Graduates of the SMI Diploma in Computing (including those opting for specialisations) are eligible to read for the BSc (Hons) Computer Science conferred by the University of London under the academic direction of Goldsmiths College, and enjoy exemptions for first year degree subjects on the merits of their attainment of the SMI MQF level 5 Diploma. Students will continue with their studies at Saint Martin’s Institute for a further two academic years.

A parallel degree conferred by Saint Martin’s Institute of Higher Education

Saint Martin’s Institute of Higher Education registered students will graduate from the SMI MQF Level 6 BSc (Honours) in Computing in parallel to the University of London degree over two further academic years, with a 6 month accredited (paid) internship in Malta. Students may opt for a traineeship under Erasmus+ for the accredited internship. This degree is accredited with the NCFHE and is awarded by Saint Martin’s Institute of Higher Education, a licensed higher education institution with license number 196.

Faculty of Computing

The Faculty of Computing at the University of Malta accepts graduates of the Diploma in Computing (including those with specialisations) as fully complying with the entry requirements to register for the BSc degrees in Computing over three academic years. The University of Malta requires applicants to have, in addition to the Diploma in Computing, an ordinary level pass in Maltese.

The Diploma in Computing prepares you for the rigours required from programmers and developers in software houses in Malta and overseas, whatever the end product that is being produced by the company. The ability to know how computers are designed, built and work, and how we are able to programme them to perform a wide variety of tasks, is the core of the Diploma in Computing.

Understanding the need for the fun factor the Institute’s faculty have reserved a quarter of the Diploma for specialisations selected by the student. These are listed below, and YOU may click on any to access and download a copy of the prospectus for each specialisation. We have a wide variety, including our best loved Game Design & Development that includes the study of Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality; Web development; Digital Marketing; the very popular Information Systems for those who will join the IT divisions in Corporations, and Smart Devices Apps development with User Experience. We also have an emerging specialisation to meet the requirements for individuals able to work in the financial services industry and crypto-currency .

We believe that studying for a computing qualification should be an enjoyable one, and we have all the equipment that one can imagine to enable students to have hands on experience to develop leading edge projects, mentored by their tutors.

A Legacy of Excellence in Computing over three decades

Saint Martin’s Institute of Higher Education has been involved in computer science education since 1985. During these past 34 years, the Institute taught computing at every level — from MQF Level 3 to 6; from ordinary (MQF Level 3) to BSc (Honours) (MQF Level 6). Our students and graduates have gone on to follow rewarding careers in Computing, locally and overseas.

Fees and rebates (full time study)

The MQF level 5 Diploma in Computing costs €5,240 in tuition fees paid in 9 equal payments of €583 per month.

Parents/Legal guardians in employment are eligible to receive a tax rebate of €3,500 resulting in a net cost to the parent/legal guardian of €1,740.

We offer a payment package of monthly installments of €100 over a period of three years through the SMIFlexiPay® scheme.

Scholarship for top performers

Students who possess grades 1 or 2 in their 4 submitted ordinary level qualifications with their applications will benefit from a €1000 reduction in their tuition fees. Learn more Click Here

Stipends and Maintenance Grants

Stipends and maintenance grants paid over three academic years at Saint Martin’s Institute of Higher Education.

Students who are reading for the Diploma in Computing including specialisations are eligible to receive monthly stipends during the academic year of €163 per month and a maintenance grant of €1397 (these are paid under the MGUS and are conditional that the student resumes studies for an undergraduate degree in Computing).

Fees and rebates (evening students)

The MQF level 5 Diploma in Computing costs €2,990 in tuition fees paid in 18 equal payments of €166 per month.

Students who are already in employment are eligible to receive a tax rebate of €2,093 resulting in a net cost to the student of €897.

Best Equipped Labs for your education

Computing is a hands on programme and Saint Martin’s Institute of Higher Education invests heavily in equipment to make sure that students can get the very best learning opportunities.

The Institute has three computer laboratories in its New Building dedicated to the Department of Computing. The Creative Computing laboratory 136 includes a multitude of equipment and technical gadgetry including a fully-equipped green screen TV studio, an audio lab, a number of Oculus Rift VR Headsets, Samsung Headgear, mobile smart phones, and Arduino devices. Every year, the institute invests in equipping this lab with the latest digital devices in order to assist students with their projects and dissertations.

A newly refurbished computer laboratory, lab 033 powered by Dell VR ready workstations, provides students with equipment that is not readily available at home. Students use this lab for workshops in virtual reality, augmented reality, user experience including audio and video development and game development.

The third lab, also powered by Dell provides the different environments through various operating systems platforms for students to learn the different computer languages taught at the Institute.
