How far is your salary really taking you?

--

What are you doing about it?

A recent Credit Suisse Report reveals that 1% of the world’s households, 52 million millionaires, own 43% of global wealth, whilst at the other end, the bottom 50% of the 7 billion people on earth, own just 1.3% between them all.

The Maltese income at an average of €20,000 is equivalent to 32.8% of the world’s population in the US$10,000 to US$100,000 annual income band.

The very low average income in the Maltese economy is a problem that persists and cannot be resolved overnight. It is no surprise that Maltese employees, with an average salary of €20,000 annually (as announced by the NSO), seem to be chasing after the expenses of living. Whilst a minority have managed to escape this captivating salary band, moving up to a more comfortable salary bracket, others seems to be stuck at trying to meet perpetually piling expenses.

Are you at the bottom rung of the income ladder?

If you are always chasing expenses, you probably are either unqualified or unskilled. You should sincerely take a good look at your chances of building a career before you join the dreaded ‘working poor’. Already there are clear signs of this situation emerging in Malta. Renting an apartment is out of proportion to the monthly salary many earn, and if it was not for the high percentage of people owning their own homes, the number of working poor would already be substantially high. The government is providing social housing for people at risk, but as the real estate prices continue to spiral upwards, more will fall into this trap, and probably government will not be able to keep up.

John Sammut embarked on his studies as an evening student with a technical background that impinged badly on his work-life balance. Mr Sammut has been awarded his degree with First Class by the University of London, as well as the Best Overall Performance in the BSc (Hons) Computing & Information Systems, Best Dissertation, in 2020 and First Globally in four subjects throughout his studies. His apprehension at studying whilst working dissipated after the first successful year of studies came with an offer of a new job!

You may not be there yet but do you want to risk it?

The one and sure action for you to avoid being entrapped in the working poor segment is to make sure you have the qualifications necessary to keep you employable, enabling you to show competences that are in demand at the work place.

If you have a basic level of education, with a valid school leaving certificate, then you should really consider going back to school, as an evening student, and study for a Malta Qualification Framework (MQF) level 5 qualification. A Diploma accredited at this level is made up of 60 European Credits (ECTS) that would require dedicated in class-room learning. Such a qualification is equivalent to the first year of a degree, and unlike sitting for A-levels (MQF level 4), a Diploma will offer you grouping of subjects that will give you the required competences to succeed in a particular job function.

Everyone must keep an eye on the future, and whilst the money earned today may be adequate if still single and living with parents, reserve a thought whether the same will be said if you will be the breadwinner for your family. How far will your current take home pay last if it needs to be shared among a small family? Remember to add a mortgage payment for your abode, or even worse a monthly rent that is determined by your landlord.

An MQF Level 5 Diploma Qualification designed to start your career

The first step up the corporate ladder is to aim at a middle management position and for this post, you should consider the Diploma in Management & Leadership, a 60 ECTS qualification that covers the most important subjects that any manager must prove competences. You will learn accounting and finance, entrepreneurship and marketing, management and leadership, strategic decision making as well as quantitative skills and statistics. These subjects form the bedrock of good management, and following this course will cost you only €3 per hour (net) for tuition — an investment in your own future!

Jessica started off reading for her Diploma in Finance, after which she decided to progress in her studies building upon her success in attaining a Distinction from her studies in the first two years.

Whilst such a qualification is highly regarded by interviewers searching for qualified people, it will also put you at the front of the queue for promotion at your current place of work. You will need to dedicate six hours weekly of classes starting at 6pm.

And if you wish to set up your own business, you should consider the Diploma in Entrepreneurship, which offers you exactly the same system as the above.
