To bolt or not to bolt
… this is the question
This article is not about the current tiff between the government and a cab hailing App brand. Although an instantaneous doubling of price, will mean less patronage on the taxi service, more private cars on the road with driver only, and an intensifying battle for the few parking spaces available.
Neither is it intended to encourage residents to flee the country when the weather is scorching and the island is creaking with the added tourist numbers. Probably holidaying in the peak summer heat, may actually be financially viable considering the excess electricity bills for air-conditioning, the cost incurred to enjoy a day or more at a beach (or pool), and the cost of eating out or ordering in, make a holiday a very attractive proposition.
This article actually deals with the brain drain of our young Maltese (and the not so young) making their fortunes away from Malta. This mass emigration is haunting indigenous businesses because of the lack of succession possibilities upon the retirement of the current generation of Maltese.
But who can blame the young if their aspirations are not being met by the Maltese economy? Youngsters have every right to prepare well for their future if other countries offer better opportunities than Malta. Simultaneously, employers are desperately looking for specialised employees for their companies!
Why study for an internationally renowned University degree?
As a young Maltese student standing at the crossroads of an educational journey, the decision of where to pursue an undergraduate degree is pivotal. Malta, while rich in culture and history, is a small island nation with a relatively limited scope for professional growth and development compared to larger European countries. In this context, attaining an internationally recognized undergraduate degree from a reputable institution, can be a strategic move to secure a prosperous and dynamic future.
Expanding Career Horizons
Malta’s small size inherently limits the range and scale of industries available on the island. By pursuing an undergraduate degree that is easily recognised overseas, Maltese students open themselves up to a broader spectrum of career opportunities. Europe is home to a diverse and robust economy with leading sectors in finance, technology, engineering, the arts, and more. An internationally recognized degree can serve as a passport to these industries, offering access to competitive job markets that might otherwise be out of reach if one possesses a low-ranking qualification.
Gaining a Global Perspective
Studying an international degree, particularly in a multicultural environment, allows students to gain a global perspective. This exposure is invaluable in today’s interconnected world. Understanding different cultures, business practices, and communication styles can be a significant advantage in a globalized economy. For Maltese students, whose home environment is more insular, this broadened worldview can differentiate them in the job market, making them more attractive to international employers.
Access to World-Class Education and Resources
The University of London, a federation of 17 of the world’s most prestigious universities, offers degrees that are based on the very latest research and academic expertise. An internationally recognized degree from such an institution not only equips students with the knowledge and skills needed for their chosen field but also carries a level of prestige that is respected worldwide. This can be especially important for Maltese students, as it can help them stand out in competitive job markets overseas (as well as in Malta).
Enhancing Employability
Studying for an international degree demonstrates a level of independence, adaptability, and determination that is highly valued by employers. Moreover, at Saint Martin’s Institute of Higher Education students are offered internships and work placements, both locally and overseas through Erasmus+, as part of their degree programs, giving students practical experience and a foot in the door of their chosen industry.
Building Language Skills
While English is widely spoken in Malta and all around the world, employers have identified a general collapse of the ability of Maltese students to communicate in English effectively in public as well when writing. Studying for a degree by the University of London in English provides the guarantee of excellence in the language.
Increased Mobility and Flexibility
An internationally recognized degree from the University of London offers greater flexibility in terms of career mobility. Maltese graduates are able to move freely across countries in pursuit of career opportunities, without the need to undergo additional certification or validation processes.
So, are our youngsters right to bolt or not?
The decision to pursue an internationally recognized undergraduate degree from the world renowned University of London is not just about obtaining an education; it’s about investing in the future. The opportunities for growth, networking, and career development available far exceed those that are available for graduates of lesser ranked universities. By attaining an internationally renowned degree without the necessity to live beyond Malta’s shores, students can equip themselves with the skills, experiences, and connections needed to thrive in a competitive global economy.
