Saint Martin’s Institute brings world ranking academic rigour to its students

Understanding how this tripartite relationship works illustrates clearly how the LSE academic prowess is passed on to students reading for a degree under the academic direction of the LSE at Saint Martin’s Institute of Higher Education in Malta.

The relationship between Saint Martin’s Institute of Higher Education and the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) is such that the academics at the Institute have the responsibility to teach students who will sit for examination papers that are set and marked by the LSE examination boards — thus guaranteeing that the students in Malta are assessed at the same academic level as the students who are reading the same degrees at the London School of Economics.

The Awarding Body — The University of London

The University of London, is the awarding body, meaning that students who successfully complete their studies are conferred their degree parchment by this renowned University. The University of London is a federation of 17 member institutions, 11 of which collaborate to offer undergraduate and postgraduate degrees to students globally, reading for their degrees in their own home country. Saint Martin’s Institute of Higher Education has been a Teaching Institution for the University of London since the year 2000, with nineteen student consecutive intakes in Commerce and Computing.

Academic Direction — The London School of Economics

The London School of Economics offers students the opportunity to read for degrees that are developed by the LSE academics, with students reading for the degrees examined by the examination boards at the LSE. This means that examination papers are set and marked solely by the LSE examination boards, and exams are invigilated by the Registrar of Examinations, Ministry of Education and Employment of the Government of Malta. The syllabus of of study unit that make up an undergraduate degree is set by the London School of Economics with parity with the syllabus covered if a student is reading for the same degree as a student at the school itself in London.

Teaching Institution — Saint Martin’s Institute of Higher Education

Saint Martin’s Institute of Higher Education was the first organisation to offer an opportunity to Maltese students to read for an undergraduate degree other than the University of Malta, in the year 2000! Staff at the Institute have worked very hard to ascertain that students who registered to read for a University of London degree never felt that they were not getting the necessary education and preparation to do well in their examinations.

The 2018 examination results attained by SMI students are portrayed in this pie chart. Over half the papers sat for attained a second class or better grade.

The Institute strives to offer students the very best preparation for these degrees. In many instances, apart from teaching for the subject matter itself, the academic staff have developed extra curricular courses that shore up any weaknesses that students may possess owed particularly to differing priorities in national education systems. The Institute has spent a lot of energy, under the mentorship of LSE academics, to calibrate the teaching at Saint Martin’s Institute to reach parity with that at the LSE.

Half the cohort of graduates for 2018 have attained a very respectable second class upper for degrees that are under the academic direction of the London School of Economics & Political Science (LSE).
