Erasmus+ traineeship opportunities
Saint Martin’s Institute of Higher Education is proud to be a member institution of the EU Erasmus+ students and academic staff mobility programme. Students are already availing themselves of Erasmus+traineeships in European Countries, namely the UK, Northern Ireland and the Netherlands.
The Institute gives a lot of importance on the experience gained from the work place to support the academic knowledge gained in the classroom. As from this past academic year, Saint Martin’s Institute of Higher Education, through its adoption of the Erasmus+ programme, is giving students the added benefit of doing their traineeship at a company in the European Union, and not necessarily in Malta. This gives a new dimension to the experience gained by students, especially those reading for leading edge specialisations that are lacking in Malta.

General information
Erasmus+ is the European Commission’s educational programme for Higher Education students, teachers and institutions. Erasmus+ aims to modernise and improve higher education across Europe and the rest of the world. It gives students and staff opportunities to develop their skills and boost their employment prospects. Good practices will be shared between universities and businesses.
The scheme currently supports cooperation between the universities and businesses from Countries listed below.

Students with special needs may apply for a specific ERASMUS+ grant after they have been selected for a mobility period. International Relations Office is ready to assist in the process.
Traineeships: Answered Questions
How long can students go abroad?
Students may go abroad from 2 to 12 months. The same student may receive grants for studying or being trained abroad totaling up to 12 months maximum per cycle of study.
What are the conditions?
Students who may be of ANY nationality) must be registered in a higher education institution and enrolled in studies leading to a recognised degree or other recognised tertiary level qualification (up to and including the level of doctorate). Erasmus students are selected by their sending higher education institution in a fair and transparent way.
Where do traineeships take place?
Receiving organizations for traineeships can be any public or private organizations active in the labour market.
Will financial support be provided or fees charged?
Students may be awarded an Erasmus+ EU grant to help cover the travel and subsistence costs incurred in connection with their traineeship abroad — as indicated below.
The payment of any national grant to outgoing students should be maintained during the traineeship abroad.
Travel Contribution
Students will receive a travel contribution based on the distance, in kilometers, between Malta and the Receiving Organisation. Distance is calculated by the Distance Calculator provided by the EC.
Travel allowances per participant are allocated as follows:
Between 100 and 449 km-€180;
Between 500 and 1999 km-€275;
Between 2000 and 2999 km-€360;
Between 3000 and 3999 km-€530;
Between 4000 and 7999 km-€820.
Subsistence Contributions
Erasmus Grants are calculated on a monthly basis according to the Erasmus mobility destination country. Grants are calculated pro-rata depending on the duration of the Erasmus+ mobility period. Programme countries are split in three groups, according to average living costs:
Group 1 countries (Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Ireland, Luxembourg, Sweden, United Kingdom, Liechtenstein, Norway) — €770 monthly;
Group 2 countries (Austria, Belgium, Germany, France, Italy, Greece, Spain, Cyprus, Netherlands, Portugal) — €720 monthly;
Group 3 countries (Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Hungary, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, North Macedonia, Turkey) — €670 monthly.

Selection Process
Saint Martin’s Institute of Higher Education has a process by which registered students may avail themselves of the Erasmus+ Traineeship programme during the Spring/Summer recess.
The process is as follows;
- The Institute publishes a call for application in December;
- Applicants will be reviewed using academic attainment, motivation towards their studies and the academic year (students who are nearing the end of their degree studies will be given preference over those who are still at the early stages of their studies);
- New applicants to the programme are given preference over those who have already availed themselves of a traineeship under Erasmus+;
- Identification of an Employer in the EU willing to take the student on a traineeship and offer a job consistent with the programme of studies and job profile as requested (wished) by the student.
- The hierarchical list of selected students is published on the Institute’s noticeboard by January 31st.
Students will have until February 15th to inform the General Manager that they wish to withdraw their candidacy.
