Saint Martin’s Institute of Higher Education is pleased to offer its calendar of FREE summer evening workshops, where we invite interested individuals to share the enthusiasm of our academics in the world of video game design and development. This series of workshops are open on a first-come-first-served basis and will be held at our New Building, Spizjar Sciberras Street, Hamrun. Click here for a location map
Workshop 1: Tuesday 9th July, 2019 (5pm to 7pm)
Video Games Design by Mr Jonathan Barbara
A game needs to be challenging and fun!
Learn Game Design, a process which exploits your creativity into bringing video games to life — this being achieved through stories, characters, game rules, game mechanics and game play.
We cover various approaches and tools to help you design your game to make players feel competent and engaged.

Workshop 2: Thursday 11th July, 2019 (5pm to 7pm)
Sound Effects for your Video Games by Mr Jonathan Barbara
Can you imagine a silent movie — neither can we have a game of silence!
Audio plays an important role in the experience of a game!
Learn Audio Design, learn how to create audio content and the elements of the design process. Understand the importance of making audio flowing with the game and find out how this is achieved. What are sound effects, and what software and hardware is necessary in the field of an audio designer?
We cover various approaches and tools to help you design the audio for your game to make players feel competent and engaged.

Workshop 3: Monday 15th July, 2019 (5pm to 7pm) Programming a Video Game by Mr Jeremy Grech
Game Development brings the ideas and design to life!
Learn about Game Development in this workshop. Discover various aspects that make up this role, including physics engine programming, graphics engine programming, animation and user interfaces.
We cover various approaches and tools to help understand what it takes to go through the stages of game development.

Workshop 4: Monday 22nd July, 2019 (5pm to 7pm) Concept Art by Mr Joseph Camilleri
During the games design process we constantly need to portray visual representations of ideas, design and moods — Concepts!
Learn about Concept Art and what it entails. Learn about basic shapes, volumes, light and shadows and why these are important in Concept Art. Learn about Character Design, setting backgrounds, scenes and story boards.
We cover various approaches and tools to help understand what it takes to be a concept artist, and how this blends well in the game design and development industry.

Workshop 5: Thursday 25th July, 2019 (5pm to 7pm) Technical Art by Mr Joseph Camilleri
Blend your artistic skills with the technological processes and tools available.
Learn about Technical art, and how this is the bridge between the artistic and technological aspects of a video game. Explore prototyping, logo design and sprites. Look at tools such as Adobe Illustrator to help you transform your creativity.
We cover various approaches and tools to help you understand what it takes to be a Technical Artist in a game design setting.
