A degree is a lifetime achievement. It is also the foundation of a solid career. Saint Martin’s Institute of Higher Education is very conscious of its obligation towards its students, who trust the institute to provide a valid programme of studies and a qualification that will be recognised throughout the graduate’s lifetime.

It is for this very reason that Saint Martin’s Institute of Higher Education chose to become a Recognised Teaching Centre, preparing students to graduate from one of the top ten Universities in the world — the University of London. This partnership guarantees the institute’s alumni a degree that is reputable and recognised throughout the world, leaving no doubt of its value for the graduate who would have made so much sacrifices to attain.

The University of London consists of 18 independent member institutions with outstanding global reputations and several prestigious central academic bodies. The Member Institutions are considered universities in their own right; they set their own entrance criteria for their courses and they offer their own services to students. Some now also have their own degree awarding powers. All students from all of the Member Institutions are also University of London students, making them part of a community of over 170,000 students and giving them access to many services in London.

Saint Martin’s Institute of Higher Education

Proud of its pedigree

It would have been pertinent of the leadership team at Saint Martin’s Institute to expect to have the ability and know-how to award degrees. The Institute has grown from its humble inception in 1985 through rigour and high competence, preparing students for public examinations. The University of London, as an examining body of a very high reputation in Malta and overseas, was an excellent opportunity for Saint Martin’s Institute to ‘learn the ropes’ from the very best, so to speak!

Saint Martin’s Institute of Higher Education joined the University of London network in the year 2000, offering the BSc (Hons) Computing & Information Systems of the University of London to Maltese students reading for the degree as evening students. Soon after the Institute joined as a Recognised Teaching Centre, the first students joined to read for the BSc (Hons) in Computing & Information Systems under the academic direction of Goldsmiths College, and the BSc (Hons) Economics & Management under the academic direction of the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE). This opened up possibilities for Maltese students to read for degrees, led by these two Member Institutions of this world-renowned University in Accounting, Banking, Computing, Economics, Finance, Information Systems and Management.

The Institute was among six international teaching institutions to be awarded the Certificate of Excellence by the Vice Chancellor, Sir Graeme Davies in 2006 with this copy of the University of London charter presented to the University of London by Queen Victoria 150 years before.

Saint Martin’s Institute of Higher Education challenged the status quo in Malta, and started off a process by which the Further and Higher Education Act was enacted by Parliament in 2012. But before this key date in Maltese educational history, Saint Martin’s Institute took the plunge and accepted students as full time and evening students to read for a wider portfolio of degrees, conferred by the University of London.

The Government of Malta supports students through the MGUS paying a monthly stipend and maintenance grants whilst in study at Saint Martin’s as full-time students. Since then, the further and higher education scene has experienced a massive transformation, and students are now offered a choice of licensed institutions to choose from. Plurality in further and higher education is important with reputable institutions will add different facets in knowledge and competences that will have a very positive effect at the workplace.
